Renovation 4Homes Rescues Master Bath Remodel for Hometown Heroes
Home Remodeler Finishes Master Bath for Newlywed ER Nurse and Police Officer as part of Hometown Heroes Initiative
(February 23, 2021 – BROOKLYN, NY) Renovation 4Homes is supporting hometown heroes – local police, nurses, doctors, and firefighters – during the coronavirus pandemic by donating home improvement and repairs. The Somerset County home remodeling company offers its expertise to deserving folks working on the front lines to give back by helping someone in the community who has been working hard to keep us safe, in healthcare, or another essential job.
Renovation 4Homes’s owners recently learned that newlyweds Paulina Faszczewska and Dominik Skibniewski, of Monroe Township, were having a hard time finishing their master bathroom, and wanted to help. With all the time they spent working on the front lines of the pandemic, the couple simply could not complete the work at home. Paulina is an Emergency Room nurse at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital Somerset in Somerville, working 12-hour shifts, and Dominik serves the community as an officer with the Spotswood Police Department.
Despite their exposure to the virus over the last several months, thankfully, neither of them contracted COVID-19 themselves.
Dominick had to pick up extra shifts while members of his department were in quarantine. Overall, they feel they’ve been quite lucky.
“It was stressful and scary in the beginning; no one really knew how to treat COVID anywhere because it was a new virus, and we had very sick patients,” recalls Paulina. “When the ICU reached maximum capacity, the ER become the hospital’s second ICU.”
“Now we have treatments, like antibodies and antivirals, which are helping people recover successfully at home,” she says. “And, it feels better going into work than it did last year (at the height of the pandemic).”
The pandemic is not the only life-changing event that has been keeping the couple busy over the last year. Early in 2019, they bought a house. It was a “fixer-upper” that was built in the 1970s, only had one previous owner, and needed to be almost completely remodeled. As work began to make the house move-in ready, the couple also began planning their wedding.
“There was so much work that needed to be done, we didn’t move in initially,” recalls Paulina. “Dom worked on the house with his dad and brother for nine months and then he was the first to actually move in and live there in December of 2019.”
The couple planned to get married in August of 2020. They had their venue picked out, plans were underway…and then COVID hit. They did not know if we were going to be able to have their wedding as planned. Every week new executive orders came out with new restrictions. Their original venue was not able to accommodate them indoors. Twenty-nine days before their wedding date, Seasons Catering in Washington Township saved their nuptials by accommodating a fabulous tented affair, outdoors in its courtyard.
“Everything was perfect; it was the best day of my life!”
After a quick trip to Miami, because their original plan to honeymoon in Italy was out of the question, Paulina finally moved in with her husband into their new home, which was still under construction.
“The last thing that needed to be done was the master bathroom,” she said. “The floor and shower tiles were done, but we couldn’t find a vanity that matched our colored tiles. White just didn’t work. We also needed glass shower doors, a vanity light, and a mirror.”
“One day, I received a message from the Vice President of the Somerset Healthcare Foundation informing me that there was a gentleman who I took care of in the ER that thought I was wonderful, and remembered I bought a house and wanted to do something nice for me out of appreciation for taking great care of him,” shares Paulina. “I never had an experience like this before! It means so, so much to me to receive such an act of generosity.”
“Paulina and her husband are one of the hardest working couples I have ever met,” said Renovation 4Homes Co-Owner and Executive Vice President Gary Shimon. “They had been working on their home for a year, while working to take care of others during this pandemic.”
“Paulina and Dominik are a perfect example of how vital our hometown heroes are to our community,” says Shimon. “Helping them get their beautiful bathroom across the finish line, so they could finally use it, was the least we could do.”
Renovation 4Homes donated the labor and worked with its vendors to provide just the right vanity cabinet, custom counter and sink, shower doors, and decorative light fixture. Renovation 4Homes installed a vanity cabinet featuring a Lexington-style door in antique nickel, from Crystal Cabinets, with brushed nickel hardware, from Top Knobs. A Cambria quartz counter in New Quay, from Marvic, ties the subtle coloring of the master bath together, installed with a Kohler sink, faucet and light fixture, donated by General Plumbing Supply. And, the semi-frameless sliding glass shower doors, from Glass Castle, provide an elegant finishing touch, while producing a fully-functioning bathroom for the couple, at long last.
“Everything matches perfectly; we absolutely love our new bathroom!” gushes Paulina.
“Dominik and I cannot express how thankful we are for the Renovation 4Homes team for helping us complete the last big project of our home,” she said. “We feel so lucky and blessed. It’s so nice to see how supported we are by the community in these difficult and unprecedented times. It is such a relief to be done working on the house, and we finally get to relax in our new home.”
