How to select the perfect siding color for your home

Choosing the perfect siding color for your home is a significant decision that can enhance curb appeal, reflect your personal style, and even boost property value. Homeowners in Central NJ, particularly those in Somerset, Hunterdon, Middlesex, and Morris Counties, are increasingly paying attention to this crucial aspect of home design. Let’s explore the latest trends and expert recommendations to help you select the ideal siding color for your residence.

Understanding the Importance of Siding Color

Siding color is not just a matter of aesthetics; it also impacts your home’s overall look and feel. The right color can create a welcoming atmosphere, highlight architectural features, and blend seamlessly with the natural surroundings. Additionally, the color you choose can affect your home’s resale value. Real estate experts suggest that a well-chosen siding color can make your property more appealing to potential buyers.

Current Siding Color Trends

  1. Neutral Tones: Neutral colors like beige, gray, and white continue to dominate the market. These hues offer timeless appeal and versatility, allowing homeowners to experiment with bold accent colors on doors, shutters, and trim. In areas like Central Jersey, neutral tones are popular for their ability to complement the diverse architectural styles found in the region.

  2. Earthy Shades: Inspired by nature, earthy tones such as olive green, taupe, and rust are gaining traction. These colors blend beautifully with the lush landscapes common in our area, creating a harmonious connection between the home and its environment.

  3. Bold and Dark Colors: For those looking to make a statement, dark colors like navy blue, charcoal, and even black are becoming fashionable. These shades add a modern, sophisticated touch and can make your home stand out. In neighborhoods where contemporary design elements are prevalent, bold siding colors are a growing trend.

  4. Two-Tone Combinations: Combining two complementary colors is another emerging trend that adds depth and visual interest to your home’s exterior. For example, pairing a lighter shade with a darker trim can highlight architectural details and create a dynamic appearance.

Regional Considerations for Central NJ

When selecting a siding color, it’s essential to consider the unique characteristics of our location in the middle of the Garden State. Here are some tips specific to Somerset, Hunterdon, Middlesex, and Morris Counties:

  • Climate and Weather:Central Jersey experiences a range of weather conditions, from hot summers to cold winters. Lighter colors can reflect heat and keep your home cooler during summer, while darker colors may retain warmth during winter. Additionally, durable, weather-resistant siding materials are crucial for withstanding these climate variations.
  • Architectural Styles:The region boasts a mix of colonial, Victorian, modern, and ranch-style homes. Choose a siding color that complements your home’s architectural style. For instance, traditional colonial homes often look stunning with classic white or beige siding, while a modern home can benefit from sleek, dark hues.
  • Neighborhood Aesthetics:Consider the overall look of your neighborhood. While you want your home to stand out, it should also blend harmoniously with the surrounding homes. Take a walk around your community to observe the prevalent siding colors and get a sense of what works well.

Expert Tips for Choosing the Right Siding Color

  1. Sample and Test: Before making a final decision, obtain samples of your top color choices and test them by holding the sample pieces up against different sections of your home. Observe how the colors look at various times of the day and under different lighting conditions.
  2. Consider the Roof and Trim: The color of your siding should complement the color of your roof and trim. A cohesive color scheme enhances your home’s overall aesthetic appeal.
  3. Think Long-Term: Choose a color that you will be happy with for years to come. While staying current with trends is nice, timeless colors often provide more lasting satisfaction and curb appeal.
  4.  Seek Professional Advice: Consult with a professional siding contractor or a home design expert who understands the trends and preferences in Central Jersey. They can provide valuable insights and help you make an informed decision.

Selecting the perfect siding color for your home involves considering current trends, regional characteristics, and personal preferences. Whether you reside in Somerset, Hunterdon, Middlesex, or Morris County, the right siding color can significantly enhance your home’s beauty and value. By staying informed and seeking professional guidance, you can make a choice you’ll be proud of in the long term.

Five points to consider when replacing a roof

Investing in a new roof is a significant decision for any homeowner. Whether your home’s roof is leaking or damaged — or you just want to make a change — ensuring you make the right choice is crucial for the longevity and weatherproofness of your home.

Here are five essential points to consider when purchasing a new roof for your Central NJ home.

1. Material Options and Durability

One of the first decisions you’ll need to make when buying a new roof is the type of material that will be used. In Central Jersey, where the weather can range from hot summers to snowy winters, choosing a durable material is essential. Common options include:

  • Asphalt Shingles: Popular for their affordability and ease of installation. They offer good durability and can last 20 – 30 years.
  • Metal Roofing: Known for its longevity and resistance to extreme weather conditions. Metal roofs can last up to 50 years or more.
  • Slate and Tile: These materials are incredibly durable and can last a lifetime, but they come with a higher price tag and require additional expertise.

Choosing a material that can withstand the region’s diverse weather conditions will save you money on repairs and replacements in the long run.

2. Warranty and Maintenance

Understanding your new roof’s warranty and maintenance requirements is essential for protecting your investment. Here are some key points:

  • Manufacturer’s Warranty: Most roofing materials have a manufacturer’s warranty that covers defects and performance issues. Make sure you understand the terms and conditions of this warranty.
  • Contractor’s Warranty: Reputable contractors in Central NJ should provide a workmanship warranty covering installation-related issues. Verify the duration and coverage of this warranty before signing any contracts.
  • Maintenance: Regular maintenance is crucial for extending the lifespan of your roof. Schedule periodic inspections and cleanings to prevent minor issues from becoming major problems.

3. Energy Efficiency and Ventilation

A properly installed roof can significantly impact your home’s energy efficiency. In Central NJ, where summers can be hot and winters cold, proper insulation and ventilation are crucial. Here are some considerations:

  • Insulation: Ensure your roof has adequate insulation to keep your home comfortable year-round. Proper insulation can reduce energy bills by maintaining consistent indoor temperatures.
  • Ventilation: Proper roof ventilation prevents moisture buildup and extends the lifespan of your roof. It also helps regulate attic temperatures, reducing the strain on your HVAC system.

To maximize your home’s energy savings, discuss energy-efficient options with your contractor while still in the planning stages.

4. Roofing Contractor Selection

Choosing the right roofing contractor is crucial for a successful roof installation. It’s best to look for contractors with a long track record helping homeowners in Central NJ. Here are some tips to ensure you make the right choice:

  • Experience and Credentials: Ensure the contractor or remodeling company has experience with the type of roofing material you’ve chosen and holds the necessary licenses and insurance.
  • Local Reviews and References: Check online reviews and ask for references from previous clients in your area — whether that be Somerset, Hunterdon, Middlesex, or Morris County.
  • Written Estimates: It’s a good idea to obtain written estimates from at least two contractors to compare pricing and services. Be wary of significantly lower bids, which might indicate subpar materials or workmanship.

All reputable contractors should be able to provide a detailed proposal outlining the scope of work, materials to be used, and a timeline for completion. Consider how buttoned-up each proposal is…if there are errors in something as simple as an estimate, can you have confidence in their work on your home?

5. Cost and Financing Options

A new roof is a significant investment, and understanding the cost and financing options is essential for all homeowners. The cost of a new roof can vary widely based on material, size, and complexity.

In conclusion, purchasing a new roof in Central NJ involves careful consideration of materials, warranties, energy efficiency, contractors, and cost. By taking these factors into account, homeowners in Somerset, Hunterdon, Middlesex, and Morris Counties can ensure their new roof provides long-lasting protection and value. Investing in a quality roof not only enhances your home’s curb appeal but also safeguards it against the diverse weather conditions we encounter in our area.

What every homeowner should know about the Federal Home Energy Tax Credits

As a NJ homeowner, you’re likely aware of the constant balancing act between maintaining your home and managing costs. But did you know that, thanks to new federal energy-efficient tax credits, your home improvement choices can now be both financially and environmentally beneficial?

Here are five reasons why these tax credits could significantly impact your remodeling decisions, especially for homeowners residing in Somerset, Hunterdon, Middlesex, and Morris Counties.

1. Significant Cost Savings
One of the most compelling reasons to take advantage of the new federal energy-efficient tax credits is the potential for substantial cost savings. According to the IRS, the Energy Efficient Home Improvement Credit covers up to 30% of eligible home improvements (such as exterior doors, windows, skylights, and insulation material), with an annual limit of $1,200 per taxpayer. For NJ homeowners, this means that projects like installing new doors and windows or upgrading insulation can be more affordable.

For example, if you spend $4,000 on new energy-efficient replacement windows, you could receive the maximum tax credit of $1,200. And keep in mind that these are credits, not deductions — so they apply directly to (and will directly reduce) any taxes you may owe. This financial incentive not only lowers the upfront cost but also enhances the long-term value of your home.

2. Increased Home Value
Energy-efficient home improvements do more than save money on utility bills — they also increase the overall value of your home. Prospective buyers in Somerset, Hunterdon, Middlesex, and Morris Counties are increasingly looking for homes with green features. Investing in energy-efficient upgrades can make your home more attractive to these buyers.

Additionally, upgrades like solar panels, energy-efficient HVAC systems, and modern insulation provide immediate benefits in terms of lower energy costs and position your home as a forward-thinking, environmentally conscious property. This can lead to a higher resale value and a faster sale when you decide to move.

3. Environmental Impact
NJ homeowners are becoming more conscious of their environmental footprint. Energy-efficient home improvements contribute significantly to reducing your home’s carbon emissions. The new federal tax credits encourage homeowners to adopt green technologies, which in turn supports broader environmental goals.

For instance, installing solar panels can drastically reduce your reliance on fossil fuels. Energy-efficient doors, windows, and insulation minimize the energy needed to heat and cool your home, further decreasing your carbon footprint. These improvements not only benefit your immediate environment but also contribute to global efforts to combat climate change.

4. Enhanced Comfort and Health
Remodeling with energy efficiency in mind can lead to a more comfortable and healthier living environment. Better insulation and high-efficiency HVAC systems help maintain consistent indoor temperatures, reducing drafts and hot spots. This creates a more comfortable home, especially during the harsh winters and hot summers typical of Somerset, Hunterdon, Middlesex, and Morris Counties.

Moreover, energy-efficient improvements can improve indoor air quality. For example, high-efficiency HVAC systems often have advanced filtration that removes allergens, dust, and other pollutants from the air. This is particularly beneficial for households with members who suffer from allergies or respiratory conditions.

5. Access to Advanced Technology
The new federal energy-efficient tax credits make it easier for NJ homeowners to access the latest in home improvement technology. Innovations in energy efficiency are rapidly evolving, offering more effective and affordable solutions than ever before.

For instance, smart thermostats that learn your schedule and adjust temperatures automatically qualify for these tax credits. These devices not only save energy but also add a layer of convenience and modernity to your home. Similarly, advancements in solar technology and energy-efficient appliances mean that you can significantly reduce your energy consumption and costs while enjoying the latest tech features.

In conclusion, the new federal energy-efficient tax credits present a valuable opportunity for Central Jersey homeowners looking to remodel homes in Somerset, Hunterdon, Middlesex, and Morris Counties. By taking advantage of these incentives, you can enjoy significant cost savings, increase your home’s value, reduce your environmental impact, enhance your comfort and health, and access the latest home improvement technologies. As you plan your next home improvement project, consider how energy-efficient upgrades can benefit both your wallet and the planet.

Bellari Thanks Community for 70 Years

3rd Generation Home Remodeler Shows Gratitude for Milestone by Giving Back

(August 11, 2020 – BRANCHBURG, NJ) Bellari, a third-generation family-owned business in Branchburg, thanks the community for 70 years in business. Founded as Somerville Aluminum in 1950, the Garden State home remodeler has become a cherished partner for New Jersey families looking to fix, expand, renovate and beautify their homes. Renamed “Bellari” in late 2018, the company has been spending its milestone year showing support to its Somerset County community.

Help at Home for Hometown Heroes

Bellari is supporting local police, nurses, doctors, and firefighters during the coronavirus pandemic by donating emergency repairs at their homes. The home remodeler offers its expertise to deserving folks working on the front lines – to give back by helping someone in the community who has been working hard in healthcare or another essential job.

“Our organization is extremely appreciative to all those hometown heroes who have always worked hard to help our community and keep us all safe, especially during the pandemic,” said Bellari Co-Owner and Executive Vice President Gary Shiman. “They work on the frontlines to take care of us, and we are honored to help with needed repairs at their homes, to help take care of them.”

Bellari has pledged to help one deserving local hero every month with a project at home. The initiative kicked off in April when Bellari replaced the back steps for Jennifer and David Smith, a Branchburg couple who both saw increased intensity in their professions ushered in by Covid-19, working in healthcare and law enforcement, respectively.  You can read their story here.

Healing Homes

Bellari also proudly supports Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital (RWJUH) Somerset, an RWJBarnabas Health facility, in its Healing Homes initiative. The Healing Homes initiative offers housing for up to 24 months for an individual or family in Somerset County who has a chronic or acute health condition that causes financial hardship and leaves them unable to afford housing and/or the basic cost of living.

Shiman has also been spotted dropping of pizzas to emergency room employees at RWJUH on several occasions.

Lifelong Customers

“They are master craftsman,” praises long-time customer Darlene Purcell, of Hillsborough. “Everything they do is quality.”

She should know. Purcell reports that she started working with “Somerville Aluminum” when they were still in Somerville, and over the past 20 years, the company has replaced all the windows, the siding and the roof. Additionally, the company installed a new bay window and added a door from the back of the garage. Bellari also replaced all of the interior doors and completely remodeled two bathrooms in her home.

“It’s been great seeing some of the same faces come back to the house over the years, depending on the project,” says Purcell. “They listen carefully and are so good at explaining things. We always have a good experience with Bellari.”

70 Years of Serving the Community

Founded in 1950 by Max Gropper, the company got its start by selling aluminum storm windows in downtown Somerville to fulfill the owners’ desire to capture some of the American dream as a post-WWII small business. Starting out with a staff of just two — Max and his brother Jack — “Somerville Aluminum” steadily grew, eventually adding a second generation of owners that included Max’s son Jeff Gropper and his brother-in-law. During their tenure, the business flourished at its 46 East Main Street location, where the company was headquartered from 1970–2013.

Throughout the decades spent in its Main Street showroom, the company expanded far beyond storm windows and siding to selling everything for your home, from kitchens, bathrooms, doors, decks and awnings to the newest energy-efficient and maintenance-free home remodeling products, with design and installation available at every price point for a new generation of discerning homeowners.

The third generation and current owners are Jeff’s son David Gropper and David’s brother-in-law Gary Shiman, who serve as president and executive vice president, respectively. Under their leadership, the company moved to a larger 15,000-square-foot showroom and design center in Branchburg in 2013, and continues to boast increasing annual sales, including enjoying exponential growth over the past two years while rebranding the company to Bellari.

Over the last 70 years, the company has:

  • Replaced more front doors than the population of Somerville
  • Installed more windows than Somerset County has people
  • Remodeled thousands of kitchens and bathrooms for happy homeowners, and in several cases, also their adult offspring

“Since the establishment of the business, the guiding principle has always been complete customer satisfaction.” says Shiman. “All three generations of owners have lived, worked, and raised families in New Jersey. This is our home too!”

“Windows and doors are our roots, and will always be the backbone of our business,” Shiman continues. “And, we have grown our breadth of offerings to provide everything a homeowner could possibly need, and continue to take pride in providing the exceptional service and premium products, across the board, that our customers have come to expect.”

“We cherish being a part of this amazing community, and are thankful to everyone who has supported us along the way; we are honored to be able to serve our neighbors for so many years,” praises Shiman. “This year is unprecedented, and we are humbled with how our community has come together to support each other, and appreciative to be a part of it.”

Bellari Provides Home Improvement Help to Branchburg Couple

(May 18, 2020 – BRANCHBURG, NJ) One way Bellari is supporting its community during the coronavirus pandemic is by donating emergency repairs to local emergency workers. The Somerset County home remodeling company wanted to offer its expertise to deserving folks working on the front lines – to give back by helping someone in the community who has been working hard to keep us safe, in healthcare, law enforcement, or another essential job.

Bellari’s owners recently learned of Jennifer and David Smith, a Branchburg couple who needed assistance replacing their back steps. Jennifer Smith, APN, BC is Director, Quality Improvement for RWJ Barnabas Physician Services, serving as an integral part of the team running the command center that has been coordinating the COVID-19 response for the RWJBH Medical Group. Her husband, Lieutenant David Smith, is a Division Commander for the Scotch Plains Police Department, who says his job has seen a shift from coordinating safety for special events to ‘how are we addressing COVID?”

Not only are the Smiths both intimately involved in coordinating care for Jersey residents in response to the coronavirus pandemic, requiring some tasks like home improvement projects to be moved to the back burner, but David was also involved in an accident on March 1 that resulted in a serious concussion and three fractured vertebrae. He volunteers as a ski patroller at Camel Back Ski Resort, and after being ‘taken out from behind’ by a wayward skier at high speed, David was out of work for a full month, recovering.

David has returned to his PD post, but the injuries he sustained meant working a modified light duty schedule, continued physical therapy, and that the homeowner, who is typically quite handy with home repairs, was now physically unable to build stairs. When removing the old stairs to put down pavers last fall, David discovered broken footings and other support issues complicating the job, so he intended to replace the back stairs “in the spring.” Now, his DIY project was moved completely off the table during his recovery, and their two children would simply have to continue jumping out of the back sliding doors to get to their backyard. Not to mention that exploring estimates and work coordinating schedules to consider hiring someone to help with the project was not a priority for the Smith family, since both of their jobs are vital to the state’s pandemic response.

“Mr. and Mrs. Smith both exemplify what it means to be an ‘essential worker’ in our community,” said Bellari Co-Owner and Executive Vice President Gary Shiman. “They are working on the front lines actually helping to coordinate care for all us, and we are honored to help with needed repairs on their home front, to help take care of them.”

Upon hearing the story about their neighbors, Bellari contacted the couple to discuss the project, and dropped off color samples to them later that same week. Materials were delivered on a Monday, and by Tuesday afternoon, the Smiths had their new stairs.

“Normally we are pretty self-sufficient,” said Jennifer Smith. “We were not only surprised by Bellari’s offer, but they were so quick and efficient, I didn’t even see them do the work! I saw supplies being delivered when I left for work Monday morning, and my husband called me the next day on Tuesday afternoon to tell me they were already done.”

“The stairs were exactly what we wanted, and you couldn’t even tell they were here!” David added. Having personally ripped up the patio to put down pavers, among other repairs over their 15 years in their Branchburg home, he knows firsthand the mess that can be made during a home improvement project of any kind.

“The timing is really perfect,” said Jennifer. “The weather is getting nicer and we live in our backyard in the summer. We intentionally bought this house with an in ground pool because we wanted to have the ‘hang out’ house in the neighborhood, for our kids and for us.”

David agreed, “Our backyard is our vacation. We have friends over for barbeques and cocktails, and it’s easy for the kids to have their own summer camp in the backyard.”

Jennifer shared, “My daughter may have said it best, that our new stairs look ‘so fancy and new, and make our backyard look so nice!’ I’m thrilled that there will be minimal to no maintenance, so they will continue looking this nice. We are really so thankful; it’s nice that there are companies like Bellari giving back to their community during this difficult time.”

“Now all I need is time off from work,” she said.

Bellari donated the railings and labor for the project and the owners are quick to acknowledge their vendor partners who kindly donated additional materials for the project. Mid-State Lumber supplied Trex decking & Royal CPVC materials and Madison Township Lumber & Supply Co provided lumber and framing materials.

“We wanted to thank emergency workers like the Smiths for their service,” says Shiman, of Bellari. “We are thrilled to coordinate the rebuilding of their beautiful back steps, so when they do have time off, they can now easily enjoy their backyard with their family.”

“I started ordering supplies and having daily COVID-19 calls on January 28,” recalls Jennifer, “and work has been nonstop since the end of February.” At least now she can quickly access her backyard to relax and recharge.
