Signs It’s Time for a Roof Replacement: What to Look For

Your home’s roof is an integral part of its structure, protecting you and your loved ones from the elements. As a homeowner in New Jersey, it’s crucial to be aware of the signs that indicate when it’s time for a roof replacement. Recognizing these signs early can save you from costly repairs and potential damage to your home. In this blog post, we’ll walk you through the key indicators, visual cues, and structural issues that may suggest the need for a roof replacement, as well as the importance of regular inspections.

  1. Visual Clues

Missing or Damaged Shingles:  One of the most visible signs of roof damage is missing or damaged shingles. Over time, exposure to the elements can cause shingles to curl, crack, or deteriorate. If you notice shingles that are no longer lying flat or are broken, it’s a clear sign that your roof needs attention. Check your roof for these issues and consider professional inspection for a closer look.

Granule Loss: Another visual clue is the loss of granules from the surface of your shingles. These granules protect your roof from UV rays and harsh weather. If you find granules in your gutters or on the ground, your roof may be at risk.

Curling Shingles: Shingles that are curling or lifting at the edges can expose your roof to moisture, leading to leaks and further damage. Inspect your roof regularly for any signs of curling.

2. Interior Indicators

Leaks: Water leaks are a clear indicator of roof issues. If you notice water dripping from your ceiling or walls, it’s essential to address the problem promptly. Leaks can lead to more extensive damage to your home’s interior and structure.

Water Stains and Peeling Paint: Water stains on your ceilings or walls and peeling paint are additional interior signs that your roof may need replacement. These issues are often the result of ongoing leaks and should not be ignored.

3. Age of the Roof

The age of your roof is a crucial factor in its deterioration. As roofs age, they become more susceptible to damage. If your roof is nearing or has exceeded its expected lifespan (usually 20-25 years), it’s advisable to consider a roof replacement, even if there are no visible issues.

4. Mold and Moss Growth

Mold, moss, or algae growth on your roof not only affects its appearance but can also compromise its integrity. These organisms can trap moisture and cause shingle decay. Regular cleaning and maintenance are essential to prevent the growth of these unwanted guests.

5. Energy Efficiency

Surprisingly, a damaged roof can affect your home’s energy efficiency. If your energy bills have been steadily increasing, it could be due to your roof’s compromised insulation. A well-maintained roof with proper insulation can help you save on energy costs in the long run.

6. Professional Roof Inspection

To ensure the safety and longevity of your roof, it’s crucial to schedule regular inspections by a professional roofing contractor. A qualified roofer can identify hidden issues and provide expert advice on the necessary repairs or a replacement.

Selecting a reputable roofing contractor is essential. Look for contractors with a solid reputation, proper licensing, and insurance. Don’t hesitate to ask for references and check online reviews to ensure you’re making the right choice.

Your roof plays a vital role in protecting your home and family. Recognizing the signs that indicate it’s time for a roof replacement can save you from costly repairs and potential interior damage. Regular inspections by a professional roofer are key to maintaining the integrity of your roof. If you’re in New Jersey and suspect that your roof needs replacement, contact Bellari for a professional roof inspection and replacement consultation. Acting now can help you safeguard your home and ensure its long-term durability and comfort.

Bellari Rescues Master Bath Remodel for Hometown Heroes

Home Remodeler Finishes Master Bath for Newlywed ER Nurse and Police Officer as part of Hometown Heroes Initiative

(February 23, 2021 – BRANCHBURG, NJ) Bellari is supporting hometown heroes – local police, nurses, doctors, and firefighters – during the coronavirus pandemic by donating home improvement and repairs. The Somerset County home remodeling company offers its expertise to deserving folks working on the front lines to give back by helping someone in the community who has been working hard to keep us safe, in healthcare, or another essential job.

Bellari’s owners recently learned that newlyweds Paulina Faszczewska and Dominik Skibniewski, of Monroe Township, were having a hard time finishing their master bathroom, and wanted to help. With all the time they spent working on the front lines of the pandemic, the couple simply could not complete the work at home. Paulina is an Emergency Room nurse at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital Somerset in Somerville, working 12-hour shifts, and Dominik serves the community as an officer with the Spotswood Police Department.

Despite their exposure to the virus over the last several months, thankfully, neither of them contracted COVID-19 themselves.

Dominick had to pick up extra shifts while members of his department were in quarantine. Overall, they feel they’ve been quite lucky.

“It was stressful and scary in the beginning; no one really knew how to treat COVID anywhere because it was a new virus, and we had very sick patients,” recalls Paulina. “When the ICU reached maximum capacity, the ER become the hospital’s second ICU.”

“Now we have treatments, like antibodies and antivirals, which are helping people recover successfully at home,” she says. “And, it feels better going into work than it did last year (at the height of the pandemic).”

The pandemic is not the only life-changing event that has been keeping the couple busy over the last year. Early in 2019, they bought a house. It was a “fixer-upper” that was built in the 1970s, only had one previous owner, and needed to be almost completely remodeled. As work began to make the house move-in ready, the couple also began planning their wedding.

“There was so much work that needed to be done, we didn’t move in initially,” recalls Paulina. “Dom worked on the house with his dad and brother for nine months and then he was the first to actually move in and live there in December of 2019.”

The couple planned to get married in August of 2020. They had their venue picked out, plans were underway…and then COVID hit. They did not know if we were going to be able to have their wedding as planned. Every week new executive orders came out with new restrictions. Their original venue was not able to accommodate them indoors. Twenty-nine days before their wedding date, Seasons Catering in Washington Township saved their nuptials by accommodating a fabulous tented affair, outdoors in its courtyard.

“Everything was perfect; it was the best day of my life!”

After a quick trip to Miami, because their original plan to honeymoon in Italy was out of the question, Paulina finally moved in with her husband into their new home, which was still under construction.

“The last thing that needed to be done was the master bathroom,” she said. “The floor and shower tiles were done, but we couldn’t find a vanity that matched our colored tiles. White just didn’t work. We also needed glass shower doors, a vanity light, and a mirror.”

“One day, I received a message from the Vice President of the Somerset Healthcare Foundation informing me that there was a gentleman who I took care of in the ER that thought I was wonderful, and remembered I bought a house and wanted to do something nice for me out of appreciation for taking great care of him,” shares Paulina. “I never had an experience like this before! It means so, so much to me to receive such an act of generosity.”

“Paulina and her husband are one of the hardest working couples I have ever met,” said Bellari Co-Owner and Executive Vice President Gary Shiman. “They had been working on their home for a year, while working to take care of others during this pandemic.”

“Paulina and Dominik are a perfect example of how vital our hometown heroes are to our community,” says Shiman. “Helping them get their beautiful bathroom across the finish line, so they could finally use it, was the least we could do.”

Bellari donated the labor and worked with its vendors to provide just the right vanity cabinet, custom counter and sink, shower doors, and decorative light fixture. Bellari installed a vanity cabinet featuring a Lexington-style door in antique nickel, from Crystal Cabinets, with brushed nickel hardware, from Top Knobs. A Cambria quartz counter in New Quay, from Marvic, ties the subtle coloring of the master bath together, installed with a Kohler sink, faucet and light fixture, donated by General Plumbing Supply. And, the semi-frameless sliding glass shower doors, from Glass Castle, provide an elegant finishing touch, while producing a fully-functioning bathroom for the couple, at long last.

“Everything matches perfectly; we absolutely love our new bathroom!” gushes Paulina.

“Dominik and I cannot express how thankful we are for the Bellari team for helping us complete the last big project of our home,” she said. “We feel so lucky and blessed. It’s so nice to see how supported we are by the community in these difficult and unprecedented times. It is such a relief to be done working on the house, and we finally get to relax in our new home.”

BELLARI CELEBRATES 70 YEARS IN BUSINESS

Bellari, a third-generation family-owned business in Branchburg, New Jersey, celebrates 70 years in business. It was founded as Somerville Aluminum in 1950 and renamed Bellari in late 2018.

Founded in 1950 by Max Gropper, the company got its start by selling aluminum storm windows in downtown Somerville. Starting out with a staff of just two — Max and his brother Jack — “Somerville Aluminum” grew, eventually adding a second generation of owners that included Max’s son Jeff Gropper and his brother-in-law.

The third generation and current owners are Jeff’s son David Gropper and David’s brother-in-law Gary Shiman, who serve as president and executive vice president, respectively. Under their leadership, the company moved to a larger 15,000-square-foot showroom and design center in Branchburg in 2013, and continues to boast increasing annual sales, including enjoying exponential growth over the past two years while rebranding the company to Bellari.

“Since the establishment of the business, the guiding principle has always been complete customer satisfaction.” says Shiman. “All three generations of owners have lived, worked, and raised families in New Jersey. This is our home too!”

“Windows and doors are our roots, and will always be the backbone of our business,” Shiman continues. “And, we have grown our breadth of offerings to provide everything a homeowner could possibly need, and continue to take pride in providing the exceptional service and premium products, across the board, that our customers have come to expect.”

Home Remodeler Installs New Front Door at Officer’s Home as part of Emergency Repairs for Emergency Workers Initiative

(July 21, 2020 – BRANCHBURG, NJ) Bellari is supporting local police, nurses, doctors, and firefighters during the coronavirus pandemic by donating emergency repairs. The Somerset County home remodeling company offers its expertise to deserving folks working on the front lines – to give back by helping someone in the community who has been working hard to keep us safe, in healthcare or another essential job.

Bellari’s owners recently learned that Sergeant Tom Meola of the Branchburg Police Department was in need of a new front door at his home in Stewartsville.

Upon hearing that Sergeant Meola had recovered from his own bout with the COVID-19 virus, Bellari contacted the officer to see if there was anything they could help fix at home when he returned to work. As it turns out, Sergeant Meola purchased his home in Stewartsville with his wife, Jess, two years ago, and the front door was warped and getting increasingly difficult to lock.

“It has never closed right,” admits Meola. “But the door was getting so bad you really had to wrestle with it to get it locked. We just had our 2nd child, and I had been working some night shifts, so it was not giving me a great sense of security when my wife would be home with the kids alone overnight.”

“We had started pricing doors to get it replaced, and then the virus hit,” recalls Meola. “Our department started breaking up squads and putting officers in quarantine in shifts, and we were working overtime when we were on duty. And, despite the precautionary measures taken, it happened. I got the virus.”

Meola had four straight days of 103.6 fever, tested positive for COVID-19, and then spent 14 days in his guest room with no interaction with anyone, not even his family. Fortunately, he had no life threatening respiratory distress requiring hospitalization, and managed not to infect anyone else in his family.

“When I got the call from Gary Shiman at Bellari asking if there was anything they could do for me, I shared our saga about the front door,” said Meola. “Within the week Gary called back to let me know someone would be coming out to take care of it.”

Bellari donated the labor and are quick to acknowledge their vendor partner ProVia who kindly donated the door. The Meola family now has a stunning Signet Cherry Fiberglass Door with Coffee Bean stain and Chinchilla Privacy Glass. Beyond the door’s aesthetics, it is secure.

“We are thrilled with our new door,” said Meola. “It not only looks so much better than the weathered wood door we had previously, but you can no longer see sunlight at the top of the door, and it is easy to lock. Gary told me he saw these doors hit with a battering ram at the ProVia showroom. Apparently they are reinforced with an oversized steel kick plate, so no one is getting in.”

“Since we first moved our business to Branchburg, Sergeant Meola stopped in to introduce himself, serving as the local PBA union representative at the time, and has been checking in on us ever since,” said Bellari Co-Owner and Executive Vice President Gary Shiman. “He has always worked hard to help others in the community, and during the pandemic, even more so. We are honored to help with needed repairs at his home, to help take care of him.”

“We are grateful to all the men and women who choose to serve on the frontlines, protecting us day after day,” added ProVia Director of Corporate Relations Joe Klink. “They deserve our honor and respect.”

The Healing Homes initiative offers housing for up to 24 months for an individual or family in Somerset County who has a chronic or acute health condition that causes financial hardship and leaves them unable to afford housing and/or the basic cost of living.

As a third-generation family-owned home improvement business in Somerset County, Bellari has provided expertise and many hours of sweat equity – as well as roofing, siding, windows, doors, plumbing, and electric – to the initiative’s inaugural renovation project.

“Renovations have been completed on the first of two homes in Somerville, thanks to tremendous community support and the generosity of partners like Bellari,” said Tony Cava, president and CEO, RWJUH Somerset. “Our dedication to serving the people of our community must extend beyond the care we provide within the walls of our hospital, and Healing Homes will allow us to provide sustainable solutions for our neighbors who encounter economic challenges while maintaining a healthy and safe environment.”

Bellari Co-Owner and Executive Vice President Gary Shiman agrees. “We must invest in and care for our community,” says Shiman, “and we are honored to be able to provide our design expertise and quality installation to the project to create a beautiful home for a family facing hardship.”

Bellari Ranks 91st on Qualified Remodeler’s Top 500 List

(October 24, 2019 – BRANCHBURG, NJ) Bellari, one of New Jersey’s largest full-service home improvement and remodeling companies, ranks 91st on the Qualified Remodeler annual ranking of the nation’s largest remodelers, and is proud to maintain its ranking among the top 100 remodeling companies in America.

Companies on the 2019 Top 500 list are ranked based on remodeling revenue generated during 2018. Remodelers on the Top 500 list are involved in a vast variety of projects, including: windows, doors, siding, kitchen and bathroom remodels, room additions, whole-house remodels, as well as insurance restoration, design-build services and light commercial projects.

“We are thrilled to cement our spot in the top 100,” said Bellari Co-Owner and Executive Vice President Gary Shiman. “Our success is indicative of our company’s unique combination of design expertise, quality installation, and exceptional customer service which have been hallmarks of our business for decades.”

The ranking as a top remodeler follows Bellari’s recent announcement of the greatest half-year in the company’s history, in terms of revenue growth and new employees.

While window, door, roofing, siding and minor home improvement jobs continue, the company has also seen a surge in full remodels. Also, with five new hires in two months, the team’s recent growth to support the growing business marks the company’s largest team expansion in the shortest amount of time, as well.

“We are seeing more business across the board in many different categories,” reports Shiman. “Our recent rebranding and investing in our company’s growth will help sustain Bellari as a leader in home improvement.”

Honor Marks 18th Consecutive Platinum Award from ProVia

(August 2, 2019 – BRANCHBURG, NJ) Bellari, one of New Jersey’s largest full-service home improvement and remodeling companies, is proud to receive a ‘Platinum Dealer’ award from leading custom door provider ProVia, a 42-year-old Sugarcreek, OH-based manufacturer of professional-class doors, windows, vinyl siding, and manufactured stone for residential use. The honor follows Bellari’s recognition as a New Jersey leader in residential roof remodeling by CertainTeed, announced last month.

ProVia President and CEO Brian Miller said, “Gary Shiman and David Gropper have been very supportive of the ProVia brand for more than 20 years as a valued ProVia dealer. We congratulate everyone at Bellari on earning their 18th consecutive Platinum Dealer award. And we are excited to continue our relationship, which began back when the company was still on Main Street, Somerville doing business as Somerville Aluminum.”

“The innovation and quality of ProVia doors is unmatched,” said Bellari President David Gropper. “Our mission has always been to offer superior products and superior service, which is why our partnership with ProVia has been so successful for so many years.”

ProVia’s ‘Platinum Dealer’ recognition is awarded to dealers who have demonstrated the highest level of commitment to selling and installing ProVia’s products. The company has won a prestigious Platinum Dealer Award every year since the award program’s inception in 2002, previously as Somerville Aluminum. This marks the first ‘Platinum Dealer’ award since rebranding to Bellari.

“We’re honored to be recognized with a Platinum Dealer Award from ProVia once again this year,” Gropper proudly stated. “This designation continues to reflect a long-standing tradition of teamwork, loyalty, mutual respect, and strong partnership between our two organizations.”
